THE GATE
date 1.6.2001 – 30.9.2001
This project was financially supported by the Ministry of Culture of Slovakia, by financial gifts from our friends from Slovakia and from abroad and from ICJW and JOINT. The most valuable, most highly rated and most interesting part of the project GATE were the days from 9/9/2001 to 9/13/2001.

On 9/9/2001
we commemorated the Day of Holocaust and racial hatred on the memorable site in Kremnicka. This event was held under auspices of the President of Slovakia, Mr. Rudolf Schuster.

The association Ester opened on 9/10/2001 the Days of Jewish Culture in the Concert Hall of Kosice. Many citizens of Kosice, members of ecumenical and religious societies, rabbi Steiner, representatives of the city, of cultural and social organizations and churches attended the cultural program. Those who attended saw the very highly rated exhibition of photographs and show windows to the theme Jewish history of Kosice and surroundings. This exhibition was created together with the Kosice’ s civic club, which markedly enriched and contributed to the success of this event. The guests had the chance to hear a concert of liturgical songs in Yiddish, by the main cantor of the Dohany synagogue in Budapest, Mr. Fekete Laszlo accompanied by piano.

On 9/11/2001
the concert of the band ESTER from Prague took place.

On 9/12/2001
the puppet theatre Feigele, under the artistic leading of Vida Neuwirth performed in the GES club. The title of the performance was Jonah and those others, or how was it to live in a whale and not only about that. The performance by its resourcefulness and fantasy caught the interest of the smallest resourcefulness spectator, but it also was a cultural and artistic experience for all age groups.

The last performance of the Days of Jewish Culture took place on 9/13/2001 by the presentation of short documentary films from the archives of the Museum of Jewish Culture in Bratislava.

SPARKLE
date 15/11/2001 – 31/10/2002
Aims of this project are to pursue maximum effort to create a tolerant society without prejudice, trying to prevent the propagation of untruthful myths and legends about the Jewish minority. Association Ester will focus not only to keep the traditions of Judaism, but also on the education of the public and mainly youth by efficient forms and methods. The association wants to reach this by providing appropriate literature, informative materials, learning texts, audio-visual materials and by personal presentation. Using these means the association wants to facilitate the increase of the knowledge about Jewish traditions, culture, history and religion to applicants from the public, pedagogic workers and students. This project will also create conditions for a valuable development of the association Ester.
The association Ester wants to have an ongoing active cooperation with other minorities and to integrate them also to the process of the changes of attitudes of the society to the Jewish minority. The association is trying to contribute to the decrease of minority and racial discrimination, intolerance, anti-Semitism and xenophobia.
Prospective financial sources to this project are grants from NPOA, The Rich Foundation Tel Aviv, International Council of Jewish Women, Jewish Agency, Foundation Ezra and other donors from Slovakia and abroad.
